Operation Hours
Operating seasonally from May 28 to October 11, the Mt. Kineo Shuttle offers regular transportation services from the public boat launch in Rockwood to the captivating Mt. Kineo peninsula. Departing every two hours in May and June, with the first trip departing at 9 a.m. and the final return trip at 4:45 p.m., the shuttle ensures convenient access for visitors. In July and August, hourly departures run from 8 a.m. to 6:45 p.m., while September and October offer hourly trips from 8 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.
Shuttle Service
For a round-trip fare of $15 per person (cash only), passengers can enjoy a comfortable and safe ride across Moosehead Lake, with masks required onboard for added safety. The shuttle ride itself is a scenic experience, providing passengers with panoramic views of the lake and the majestic Mt. Kineo.

Visitors to Mt. Kineo can explore a variety of outdoor activities, including hiking, golfing, and sightseeing. With no road access to the peninsula, the Mount Kineo Shuttle offers the only means of transportation, making it an essential part of the adventure.
How long does it take to hike Mount Kineo?
Get to know this 3.4-mile loop trail near Rockwood, Maine. Generally considered a moderately challenging route, it takes an average of 1 h 55 min to complete. This is a very popular area for birding, fishing, and hiking, so you'll likely encounter other people while exploring.
Outdoor Activities
Hiking: Mt. Kineo offers a variety of hiking trails suitable for all levels of hikers. The Indian Trail and the Bridle Trail are among the most popular.
Indian Trail: (0.9 miles, moderate): climbs steeply along open ledge, making it the shortest but most strenuous route to the summit and fire tower. While more challenging, The Indian Trail also provides the best views of any trail.
Bridle Trail: (1.1 miles, easy): is the original fire warden trail and provides a less steep route to the summit for hikers. It begins 0.3 miles along the Carriage Trail, traversing through stands of maple and birch before converging with the Indian Trail just shy of the summit.
Carriage Trail: (2.2 miles, easy): parallels the west shore of the peninsula, following the waters of Moosehead Lake to Hardscrabble Point. The Carriage Trail then connects to the North Trail creating a perimeter hike of the peninsula.
North Trail: (1.9 miles, moderate): offers a view of the eastern peninsula and when combined with the Carriage Trail, the longest hike to the summit of Mount Kineo. From Hardscrabble Point, the North Trail winds through the low level mixed hardwood forest and then rises more steeply up Mount Kineo's southeastern cliffs.
What is Kineo Flint?
Native Americans traveled to Mount Kineo for about 11,000 years to collect the geographic feature's rhyolite rock. Rhyolite is similar in properties to flint, and is often called “Kineo Flint.” Numerous tribes traveled long distances, sometimes even hundreds of miles, to obtain Kineo rhyolite.
The Historic Fire Tower: The fire tower at the summit of Mt. Kineo is a notable landmark with significant historical importance. Built in the early 20th century, the tower was part of a network used to spot and prevent forest fires. Today, it serves as a lookout point offering unparalleled views of Moosehead Lake and the surrounding wilderness. Climbing the fire tower is a highlight for many visitors, providing a unique perspective and a sense of connection to the region's conservation history.
