Join the experience of the Ice Harvest Sunday at Maine’s Historic Thompson Ice House Museum for one of Maine's most beloved winter events—the annual Ice Harvest Sunday! Step back in time and experience an age-old tradition as participants and spectators alike gather to harvest ice from Thompson Pond using authentic 19th-century tools and techniques.

The Ice Harvest Experience

Witness history in action as Kenny Lincoln, President of the Thompson Ice House Museum, makes the ceremonial first cut through the thick pond ice using traditional saws. Once the ice channel is cleared, the real fun begins! Participants of all ages are invited to grab a tool and help prod, float, and guide large blocks of ice toward the historic ice house.

Inside the ice house, brave volunteers stack the frozen blocks just as it has been done for over 200 years. The rhythmic teamwork and authentic equipment offer a fascinating glimpse into Maine's ice-harvesting past.

Originally, Asa Thompson began cutting ice on Thompson Pond solely for use on his farm. However, demand from neighbors grew, leading him to establish a commercial ice business. Thompson built the iconic ice house to store and sell the ice, which quickly became sought after by local fishermen for transporting shellfish. Residents, yachtsmen, and summer visitors also relied on Thompson Pond ice for their iceboxes and to make ice cream. Over the years, five generations of the Thompson family, along with two private contractors, operated the ice business until 1985.
