Must-Visit Snowmobile Loops and Trails in Maine

Moosehead Lake Region – The Moose Loop

One of the most popular destinations for snowmobiling in Maine, the Moosehead Lake region, is home to the iconic Moose Loop. This trail offers diverse terrain and stunning views of Maine’s largest lake, making it an ideal spot for both seasoned riders and beginners.

  • The Moose Loop
    • Located in the Moosehead Lake region, the Moose Loop Trail is Maine’s longest snowmobile loop trail.  You can ride anywhere from 138 to 166 miles, depending on the route you take.  The Moosehead Lake Region usually gets over 100 inches of snowfall each year making this area a prime destination for snowmobilers.  The Moose Loop Trail circles around Moosehead Lake.  A cutoff trail runs through Rockwood and past Mt. Kineo for those looking for a shorter trip.  A quick trail runs part of the way up Mt. Kineo for a beautiful view of the region.

  • Route 66 Half Loop
    • There are several other great trail rides in the Moosehead Region.  The Route 66 half-loop is around 55 miles long and makes a loop from Kokadjo to Rockwood to Greenville and back.  Along the way take a side trip to see historic Katahdin Ironworks by taking ITS 85/86 to the ITS 110 connector trail.  The B-52 Crash Site on Elephant Mountain is also located close to the loop.  It can be visited by following ITS 85/86 towards Wilson Ponds.

The Forks

Known as a hub for snowmobiling, The Forks provides access to several remarkable trails:

  • Kennebec River Loop
    • Distance: 20 miles roundtrip

    • A short yet scenic loop that follows the Kennebec River, this trail offers the opportunity to hike to Moxie Falls, Maine’s tallest waterfall, located off ITS 87.

  • Bingham Wind Farm Loop
    • Distance: 55 miles roundtrip

    • This loop provides stunning panoramic views of Moxie Mountain, Sugarloaf Mountain, the Bigelow Range, and Pleasant Pond Mountain.

  • Grand Falls Loop
    • Distance: 70 miles roundtrip

    • Known for its scenic views of the Dead River, Granny Cap Mountain, and Grand Falls, this trail is a favorite among riders. For a more extensive adventure, add the Coburn Mountain Loop to extend your ride to 95 miles.

Coburn Mountain

  • Nicknamed the “Peak of Maine Snowmobiling”, Coburn Mountain features the highest groomed snowmobile trail in the state.

  • Trail Options:

    • The Coburn Mountain Loop ranges from 95 to 130 miles roundtrip, depending on whether you include the Jackman Trail.

    • Guided snowmobile tours are available, catering to riders of all experience levels.
