Explore Bigelow Preserve in Maine – Cranberry Peak & Beyond

A notable destination explore Bigelow Preserve in Maine is Cranberry Peak, renowned for its stunning views and challenging trails. Marked by blue paint blazes, the trail ascends Cranberry Peak with the possibility to continue onto the Appalachian Trail. The trail, while pleasant, is demanding and passes Arnold's Well and several ledges offering panoramic views before reaching the peak.

  • Trail Length: 9.2 miles (round trip)

  • Difficulty: Moderate to Advanced

Trail Description

The trail begins at the Cranberry Peak Trailhead, where hikers embark on a moderate ascent for about a mile before crossing a brook. From there, the trail steepens, leading hikers through a deep cleft known as Arnold’s Well, a significant landmark associated with Benedict Arnold’s ill-fated march to Quebec. Though usually dry, this ledge occasionally holds non-potable water. At 1.1 miles, hikers reach First Ledges, a relatively level area that provides breathtaking views of Stratton and Flagstaff Lake.

After another 0.2 miles, a side trail (200 feet) leads to The Cave, a huge overhanging slab that’s worth the short detour. The trail was opened in 1934-35 by Game Warden Helon Taylor of Eustis, Maine, and Myron Avery, a key figure in creating the Appalachian Trail, recognized its historical significance in his 1942 edition of the Appalachian Trail Guide.
