Located just 10 miles from the University of Maine, Orono, and 18 miles from Bangor, it provides an accessible escape into the natural world when you explore Hirundo Wildlife Refuge.


Activities and Experiences

  • Hiking and Trail Exploration: With over 7.4 miles of trails ranging from easy to moderate difficulty, Hirundo offers a variety of routes that wind through its scenic landscapes. Enjoy the serene beauty of maple and juniper swamps, evergreen forests, and the vast wetlands.

  • Wildlife Viewing: The refuge is a hotspot for wildlife enthusiasts. Spot playful river otters, mink, and breeding Wood Ducks. Bird watchers can delight in sightings of Bald Eagles and the elusive American Bittern. In winter, tracks of moose, deer, red fox, muskrat, beaver, black bear, and fisher can often be seen in the snow.

  • Canoeing and Kayaking: Paddle along the Pushaw and Dead Streams, enjoying the tranquility and beauty of the water. Canoes are available for a modest donation, offering a peaceful way to explore the wetlands.
