Snow Roller History

Snowroller Day derives its name from a fascinating piece of New England history. The first snow roller in this area was built in 1914 by Walter Sears of Willimantic. Walter, a skilled craftsman with a workshop at his home, made sleds, sharpened axes, and performed various other odd jobs. The snow roller, constructed primarily from spruce and oak, featured round rollers measuring about six feet wide and five feet in diameter. It included shallow troughs in the front and back—one for carrying feed for the horses and the other for shovels and essential equipment.

Before the advent of horse-drawn snow rollers, navigating snowy roads was a significant challenge, limiting travel during winter months. With the snow roller in operation, roads became smoother, making sleighing and walking much easier. Most towns in New England employed rollers, often using oxen instead of horses. However, very few of these machines remain intact for public viewing today, making their legacy an important part of Snow Roller Day celebrations.
